The Challenge
FitPulse needed a comprehensive fitness app that could compete with established players like MyFitnessPal and Strava. They required real-time health data integration, personalized workout plans, and social features — all while maintaining HIPAA compliance for health data.
Our Solution
We built a cross-platform app using React Native with native modules for HealthKit and Google Fit integration. The AI coaching engine uses TensorFlow Lite for on-device workout analysis, providing real-time form correction and adaptive training plans based on user progress.
The Vision
FitPulse Health was founded with a mission to democratize personal training. The founder, a former professional athlete, saw how expensive and inaccessible quality fitness coaching was for most people. The vision was to create an AI-powered personal trainer that could provide real-time feedback, personalized plans, and motivational support — all from a smartphone. The challenge was building something that felt genuinely intelligent, not just another workout timer with a fancy UI.
Engineering the AI Coach
The AI coaching engine is the heart of FitPulse. We implemented a multi-model approach: TensorFlow Lite handles real-time pose estimation using the phone's camera, analyzing 17 body keypoints at 30fps to detect exercise form and count reps. A separate recommendation model (collaborative filtering + reinforcement learning) generates personalized workout plans that adapt weekly based on completion rates, reported difficulty, sleep data from HealthKit, and heart rate recovery metrics. The system identifies 23 common form mistakes across 50+ exercises and provides real-time audio and visual corrections.
Social Features & Gamification
Retention in fitness apps is notoriously difficult — industry average 30-day retention is under 25%. We designed a social layer that combines workout challenges, leaderboards, achievement badges, and workout sharing to create accountability and community. Users can join group challenges, share workout summaries (with privacy controls), and earn streaks. The gamification system was inspired by Duolingo's retention mechanics, adapted for fitness. These features drove our 73% 30-day retention rate — nearly 3X the industry average.
Scaling & Performance
As the user base grew past 50K, we encountered and solved several scaling challenges. Real-time workout sync required WebSocket connections that we optimized to handle 10K concurrent sessions. The social feed needed a fan-out-on-write architecture to handle the high read-to-write ratio. We implemented intelligent data syncing that batches HealthKit data uploads to minimize battery drain — a critical factor in user satisfaction. The app now maintains a consistent 4.8★ rating with less than 0.1% crash rate across both platforms.
